Abstract

This paper investigates some potentially negative effects that roman letters could have on dictation of English words. The following procedure was used: (1) A group of English words to be used on a dictation test were selected from two middle school English textbooks. (2) A dictation test was given to students who had just entered junior high school. (3) A considerable number of answers on which roman letters could have some effects were extracted. (4) The answers found in (3) were classified into several groups. Finally, based on the results of the experiment, some educational materials are suggested with a view to screening out such negative effects.
